8 Essential Items to Aid Others in an Emergency

8 Essential Items to Aid Others in an Emergency

At the age of 13, during a friend’s Bat Mitzvah, my friends and I wanted to request “Jack and Diane” by John Cougar Mellencamp. However, the DJ told us he would only accept written requests, which was frustrating since none of us had a pen. We ended up spelling out “Mellencamp” using cheese dip on a cocktail napkin. From that moment, I resolved to always keep a pen with me.

Though requesting a favorite song at a party may not seem like an emergency, this annoying incident sparked my determination to be prepared for any situation. Just like the pen I always carry, the following eight items are compact and might prove invaluable during a crisis.

1. Handkerchief

A handkerchief is one of the most useful small items you can carry. While its main function is for blowing your nose or wiping sweat, it can serve multiple purposes: cleaning surfaces, acting as a makeshift bandage or tourniquet, functioning as a potholder, keeping you cool when wet, or even serving as a self-defense tool when filled with change. No pack of disposable tissues can compete with the versatility of a hanky.

2. First Aid Kit

Creating or purchasing a compact first aid kit for your bag or car is straightforward. It should include essentials like bandages, antiseptics, antibiotic ointments, and pain relievers. For those without a purse, a slim first aid kit made up of bandages and travel-sized antiseptic wipes or ointments will suffice. You never know when someone might require prompt, minor medical assistance. (See also: 6 Essential Items for Your Travel First Aid Kit)

3. Multi-tool

A multi-tool or Swiss Army knife can make everyday tasks easier, whether you need to open a package, remove a splinter, or slice an apple. Additionally, a pocket knife could be critical in emergencies, such as when seat belts become stuck in an accident, potentially trapping someone inside a vehicle. With a knife, you can ensure both your safety and that of others in the car.

The back of a pocket knife can also act as a window punch in emergencies. If your vehicle ends up underwater with electric windows, being able to shatter the windows could be crucial for survival.

4. Reusable Water Bottle

Having a water source on hand is vital for emergencies. The most apparent issue you might face is dehydration or heat exhaustion. A water bottle also provides opportunities to clean wounds, sterilize equipment (if boiled), or wash away dirt from the windows during a hypothetical zombie apocalypse to assess what’s approaching.

While it’s possible to buy single-use water bottles, opting for a reusable option is not only more economical but also better for the environment. (See also: 5 Budget-Friendly Travel Items That Can Save You Money on Your Next Trip)

5. Feminine Hygiene Products

Menstruation can strike unexpectedly, so it’s wise to have some menstrual products like pads or tampons ready for those inconvenient moments.

Men and others who don’t menstruate shouldn’t think this item doesn’t concern them for two main reasons:

  • Wound Treatment: Tampons and pads are made from sterile, absorbent materials, making them excellent for treating puncture wounds and they can be unwound for use as dressings for burns or scrapes.

  • Assist Others: Everyone knows someone who may need feminine products in a pinch. Helping a woman in need by providing a tampon or pad can really save her day.

6. Safety Pins

Safety pins are incredibly handy. They can hold a shirt together if a button pops off, help close a bag with a broken zipper, or serve as a temporary fix for a shattered necklace clasp.

In addition to those uses, safety pins can keep hotel curtains closed, secure your keys while riding roller coasters, and eliminate static cling, making them a practical solution for a variety of unexpected situations.

7. Flashlight

Even though most people carry smartphones that provide light, it’s wise to have a standalone flashlight. What if you need to locate your phone under a car in the dark?

Compact, lightweight LED flashlights are available and take up minimal space while providing significant illumination. Keep one in your car or on your keychain.

8. Lighter

While lighters were once essential for smoking, they are still valuable to carry. In case of emergencies, a lighter enables you to sterilize needles, light candles, or start a fire for warmth and cooking.

Lighters can also help with tasks like melting a frayed shoelace’s end or lighting birthday candles. Although these situations aren’t emergencies, having a lighter on hand can certainly make you a hero for the day.

Daily Preparedness Matters

Most of the items mentioned may not be needed daily. However, you never know when you will face a power outage, medical situation, wardrobe mishap, or a hesitant DJ. When those situations arise, you’ll be grateful to have the tools at hand to resolve the issue.
