14 Reasons to Embrace Aging
I openly acknowledge that I have my insecurities concerning aging. While the increasing age (I’m approaching 37 this year) isn’t the main concern, it’s the visible signs of youth fading as life experiences accumulate. Aging is undoubtedly challenging, but like anyone else, I must face it. So, let’s explore the positive side of adding another year to the tally. Here are 14 reasons why celebrating another birthday is not so dreadful after all.
1. Increased Self-Acceptance
Once you get used to making the shift from a youthful-looking 30 to an authentic 40, it becomes less daunting. Although I still grapple with the notion of aging, my anxiety has lessened compared to when I dreaded turning 30, having celebrated five 25th birthdays. Now, I embrace the journey, organize a memorable birthday celebration with loved ones, and relish in the joy of it.
Beyond surface issues, I’ve gained a deeper comfort in various aspects of life—professional achievements, personal relationships, autonomy, and the financial ability to enjoy travel and fine dining rather than solely relying on bulk ramen and inexpensive drinks.
2. Retirement Plans
When you take steps toward establishing a solid retirement plan, it allows you to transition into your later years with enthusiasm. Even if your financial status isn’t exactly where you’d like it to be, there is still potential for satisfaction. You may adjust your aspirations for global travel, but life’s unpredictability will lead you to find fulfillment in the resources at hand. You may discover that a full retirement isn’t necessarily your goal, so part-time work could suit your lifestyle better. This allows you to experience freedom while still engaging in enjoyable work, like serving at a local shop, or exploring opportunities for side gigs, such as ridesharing or selling crafts online.
3. Amazing Discounts
Senior discounts are fantastic, but even before hitting that milestone age, you can benefit from age-related discounts on things like car insurance, which reward good driving records and maturity.
4. Shifting Focus
Your focus evolves with age, as milestones such as marriage and parenthood shape your outlook. Although these particular experiences are not in my future—I’ve had my share of the former—my priorities have shifted towards meaningful financial commitments like my mortgage, overshadowing previous frivolous expenditures.
5. Enhanced Intimacy
There seems to be a deeper connection in intimate moments as you enter your 30s, no matter your relationship status. Perhaps it’s due to the slowing pace of life, but I find that intimacy has become more passionate and significant now than it was in my 20s.
With growing confidence and lesser tolerance for selfish partners, my standards have elevated, resulting in improved experiences in my intimate life over time.
6. Letting Go of the Minor Issues
In my younger days, every minor inconvenience felt monumental. However, I’ve learned to let go and move past trivial matters far more easily now, simply due to the lack of time and energy to dwell on them.
7. Genuine Friendships Surface
Life is full of challenges that can either strengthen or weaken our relationships. I once believed that having many friends was important, but it has become clear that the true value lies in the quality of those relationships. I now cherish the one true friend who shares my couch on a quiet Friday night more than I did the fleeting enjoyment of a party filled with acquaintances, none of whom would be there in times of need. 8. Freedom from Others’ Opinions
Do I still care about others’ perceptions? Of course, but I’ve realized that my concern has shifted. Rather than worrying about how I appear—my clothing choices, physical attributes, or possessions—I now focus on what truly matters: my character. Recognizing that I cannot satisfy everyone has freed me from that pressure.
Simply be true to yourself, and everything else will align.
9. The Power of Choice
I’ve learned to say no to gatherings I don’t wish to attend, such as family events or weddings. Life is too short to endure discomfort at the expense of obligation. While this may disappoint some, prioritizing my own comfort is essential.
10. Increased Earning Potential
With age comes experience, which ideally translates into better financial rewards. You also find yourself appropriating funds towards homes, children, and life’s anticipated expenses, embracing that “grown-up” lifestyle. (See also: How to Use Glassdoor to Earn More Money)
11. Superior Party Fare
In my twenties, I hardly experienced gourmet food at parties—perhaps just a few bags of chips. Now in my 30s, I enjoy a multitude of exquisite appetizers prepared with care by generous hosts. Delicate crab puffs easily beat stale snacks any day.
12. Less Concern for Your Appearance
While I still pay attention to my appearance and maintain a workout routine, I have grown more forgiving of myself over the years. I now emphasize the health benefits of fitness rather than solely obsessing over achieving a six-pack or toned physique. (See also: 10 Ways to Age Well for $0)
13. A Treasure Trove of Experiences
At age 36, I reflect on countless cherished memories, and I genuinely feel like my journey is just beginning. I eagerly anticipate looking back twenty years from now, hoping to feel proud of the life I’ve lived.
14. Age is Merely a Number
Once you hit a certain age, the significance of that age starts to diminish. Does turning 50 feel different from 60? Although I’m not quite there, I currently feel healthier and more at ease mentally and emotionally now than I did at 30, which alleviates my fears about future milestone birthdays.
