19 Budget

Feeling stuck indoors due to harsh winter weather? You’re not on your own. Banish the indoor blues with these fun and budget-friendly activities to enjoy while the storm rages outside.

1. Host a cooking battle with a partner

My boyfriend and I enjoy whipping up meals together at home, but we also indulge in comfort food. Our recent cook-off featuring chicken wings alongside cookies was an absolute blast. With our air fryer making wing preparation a breeze (it’s truly transformed our cooking experience!), the cookies offered a delightful contrast to the spiciness of the wings.

2. Stream this year’s Best Picture nominees

Before the Academy Awards each year, I love attending AMC theaters’ Best Picture Showcase, where all nominated films are screened either across two full Saturdays or back-to-back in a 24-hour marathon.

However, you can enjoy this year’s nominees right from the comfort of your home. Check for on-demand rental options and organize your own movie marathon in your living room or bedroom. Don’t forget to stock up on snacks like candy and popcorn for a cozy night in catching up on award-winning films without stepping outside.

3. Throw a dog playdate

My dog Jaxon relishes his beach days in warmer months, especially when he can socialize at outdoor dog-friendly happy hours. With winter upon us, it’s the ideal time to invite some of his canine companions over to play. It benefits both of us; he plays with his buddies, and I can enjoy chatting and sipping drinks with friends.

4. Begin bullet journaling

My wonderful friend Brooke recently showed me how to bullet journal, a method where you jot down quick notes or tasks rather than writing lengthy sentences, using symbols to prioritize. This approach is beneficial for anyone with a busy schedule looking to stay productive. (See also: This Simple Journal May be the Fix for Your Finances)

5. Cozy up with a podcast

Make yourself a warm cup of tea, snuggle into a comfy blanket, and settle into your coziest chair for a few hours of captivating podcast content, such as the popular murder-mystery series. And even if you’re not expecting a refund, organizing your taxes ahead of time can alleviate stress as Tax Day approaches. (See also: 12 Things You Should Know About the New Tax Law)

8. Plan an inexpensive weekend adventure

You don’t have to travel far for a change of scenery. Explore local options for an exciting weekend filled with low- or no-cost activities like hiking, biking, going to open-mic nights, bingo, or trivia at a bar.

9. Enjoy the snow

During a recent blizzard, I bundled up and made my way downtown for brunch and drinks. Along the way, I bumped into friends, helped others navigate tricky driving situations, and got a fantastic workout from the snowy terrain. It turned out to be one of the most memorable winter experiences I’ve had.

10. Experiment with a soup recipe

Nothing feels as comforting as a warm bowl of homemade soup on a cold day. While making soup might seem like a lengthy process, some recipes can be ready in about half an hour! A simple search on Pinterest can point you toward some delicious options. (See also: 20 Cheap and Easy Soup Recipes)

Channel your inner child by using your extra flat sheets to create a fort in your living space. Line it with comfy pillows, throws, your favorite snacks, and electronic devices to keep you entertained.

12. Feed the local birds

Gather some pinecones, coat them in peanut butter, roll them in birdseed, and hang them from your porch or nearby trees. You’ll enjoy watching vibrant birds like cardinals and blue jays come by for a meal.

13. Declutter your closets and sell unwanted items

Organizing your spaces can be fun, especially when it results in some extra cash. Clear out clothes in good condition and sell them through online consignment platforms like Swap.com. 18. Utilize gift cards for online shopping

Shopping is one of my favorite activities, especially during this time when great sales are available, such as post-Christmas discounts and President’s Day deals, which is one of the best shopping weekends of the year!

19. Begin a scrapbook of your recent travels

After a breathtaking trip to Colorado Springs, filled with adventure and nature, my boyfriend and I have plenty of photos to create a scrapbook. You don’t have to travel to start your own; you likely have photographs and keepsakes from past trips just waiting to be compiled. Plus, with Valentine’s Day approaching, a personalized scrapbook could make a thoughtful gift.
