Effortless Travel: The Essential Carry

Are you looking to pack everything you need into a carry-on bag for your travels, whether they last two weeks or two months? This ultimate carry-on packing list has you covered.

These essential items have been meticulously chosen based on 12 years of extensive travel experience, including two years of traveling solely with carry-on luggage. Yes, for two years, all of my belongings fit into a single carry-on suitcase. (Also see: 5 Ways Carry-On Luggage Can Save You Time and Money)

Your Ultimate Carry-On Travel Packing List

This adaptable packing list accommodates various climates and situations. Tailor it to your needs by selecting items from the “Optional” categories based on your specific journey.

For adventurers heading to Nepal, pack a down jacket, scarf, hat, hiking shoes, and a headlamp. If you’re visiting Paris in the fall, leave the outdoor gear at home and opt for ballet flats and a cozy sweater instead.

This list caters to everyone, so feel free to adjust it according to your preferences.

Luggage and Organization

Choosing the right luggage is vital; it’s your home away from home, and effective packing tools keep you organized and help optimize your space.

  • Rolling Luggage/Backpack – I prefer rolling luggage (like the soft-sided Pacsafe Toursafe 21) so I can use a backpack for my electronics and other items. However, for extremely light packing, I might opt for a single-bag travel solution.
  • Daypack – Needed only if you’re not traveling with just one bag.
  • Hoboroll – A lightweight packing aid that helps organize and compress your belongings.

Apparel

  • 2 Pairs of Pants – Lightweight and quick-drying, suitable for casual or semi-formal occasions.
  • 1 Pair of Capri Pants or Shorts – Depending on the weather and your personal taste.
  • 2-3 Short-Sleeved Tops
  • 1-2 Long-Sleeved Tops
  • 5 Pairs of Underwear – Made from light synthetic materials for easy overnight drying.
  • 2 Bras (for women)
  • 3-5 Pairs of Socks – Adjust the number based on climate; pack fewer for warmer conditions.
  • Swimwear
  • Packable Rain Jacket – A waterproof layer that can be compressed, useful in warm climates on its own or layered over a down jacket in colder weather.

Optional Apparel

  • Down Jacket – Lightweight and compact for cold environments.
  • Sweater/Cardigan – Ideal for layering in cooler temperatures.
  • 1 Pair of Leggings/Long Underwear – Great for women, while leggings/long underwear can also serve as base layers for both genders.
  • The “Little Black Dress” – A classic piece for dressing up.
  • Tank Top(s) – A versatile addition for hot weather, layering, or workout use.
  • Sportswear
  • Sleepwear – Choose dedicated pajamas, or opt for long underwear/shirts instead.
  • Scarf – Useful for warmth or a stylish accessory.

Footwear

  • Walking Shoes – Ideally a combination of fashion and practicality.
  • Flip Flops – Versatile as sandals, for the shower, or even as indoor slippers; lightweight and multifunctional.

Optional Footwear

  • Sandals – Perfect for warm destinations; here’s what to look for in ideal travel sandals.
  • Hiking Footwear – For a lightweight option, consider barefoot trail runners like Xeroshoes Mesa Trail or Vivobarefoot Primus Trail/Magna Trail.
  • Ballet Flats – A lightweight dressier option for women. While Tieks are on the pricier side, they’re favored by experienced travelers.

Most items listed below can be found in solid formats at Lush, making it a carry-on traveler’s dream!

  • Facial Cleanser
  • Soap
  • Moisturizer
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Hair Styling Product
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant – Salt crystal deodorant is compact and lasts a long time (all-natural)
  • Toothbrush
  • Razor
  • Nail Clipper

Optional Toiletries

  • Hair Accessories
  • Menstrual Cup

Medical Kit

Be prepared! Just pack a few tablets of each over-the-counter medication.

Optional Medical Supplies

  • Supplements – I bring along multi-vitamins, probiotics, vitamin C, and oregano oil to maintain my health and tackle illnesses.

Electronics

As a digital nomad, my electronic gear often exceeds that of casual travelers. Keep in mind that every device comes with cables and adapters that occupy space, so only pack what you will actually use.

  • Laptop or Tablet – Most people find a tablet sufficient for vacation purposes.
  • Smartphone – Essential for navigation, communication, and photography; here’s how to stay connected while abroad.

Optional Electronics

  • Camera – For those who prefer a dedicated device over a smartphone.
  • External Hard Drive – Useful for backups, especially if internet access for cloud storage is not reliable in certain areas.
  • E-Reader – While you can use your phone/tablet as a substitute, you’ll want to avoid bringing physical books!

Electronics Accessories

  • Universal Travel Adapter – For charging devices in locations with varying plug types and voltage.
  • Laptop/Tablet Case – Offers protection and ease of transport.

Travel Essentials

While these items may seem like extras, many are essential!

  • Sunglasses
  • Sun Hat
  • Passport Holder – Opt for one with RFID protection.
  • Plastic Document Holders – Useful for storing copies of vital documents and ID.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – I prefer a collapsible type like the Platypus for lightweight travel.
  • Earplugs – Handy for unexpected noisy environments.
  • Ziploc Bags – Incredibly versatile!

Optional Extras

  • Headlamp – Essential for camping or hiking excursions.
  • Notebook – A must for those who love to jot down notes or sketch.
  • Travel Towel – Compact, super-absorbent, and quick-drying, perfect for hostels, beaches, and camping.
  • Warm Hat
  • Buff – Versatile in its use.
  • Resistance Bands – For fitness on the go.
  • SteriPEN Ultra – A lifesaver when you encounter non-potable water.

Understanding Carry-On Weight Restrictions

Carry-on regulations differ among airlines and routes, with budget airlines weighing both the carry-on and personal items. Always check the details when booking your flight to ensure compliance.

A clever trick is to wear a jacket with multiple pockets and load them up with heavier items; anything worn is usually not counted toward weight limits! After you check-in, you can rearrange as needed.
